Muesli: Daniel Meets Bircher-Benner
I made a choice to begin on the Daniel Plan as I do most things; not really believing I would complete it but really wanting to try. Commitment to the Daniel Plan is designed to provide a way for me to participate in a process of restoration and healing as a true steward of my body; and, as Gail Devers says, every accomplishment starts with the decision to try.
In 1897, Dr. M. Bircher-Benner established a clinic in Switzerland that took into account the whole man, body and soul. His recipe for Muesli is a breakfast dish still enjoyed by many today (even found on the breakfast buffet of many cruise ships.) It seemed to me that Daniel and Bircher-Benner would form a plan for me that can work! So, here is Organic Gamma's Muesli which of course uses ingredients from the food stockpile.
Bircher's original recipe used very little grain and lots of fresh fruit; I use oats and chia seeds.
Dried fruits, nuts, applesauce, and almond milk are then combined with the oats and chia seeds. Vanilla and spices to taste are added and the muesli is refrigerated over night.
Organic Gamma's Muesli
1 cup rolled oats (not instant)
1/2 cup chia seeds
1/4 cup dried apricots (chopped)
1/4 cup dried currents
1/4 cup walnuts
1/4 cup applesauce
1 1/2 cup almond coconut milk
1 teaspoon vanilla
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
Combine all ingredients in order listed in a glass storage container. Refrigerate overnight.
Serve with your choice of fresh toppings: fruit, nuts, yogurt, chocolate chips.
Enjoy with toppings of your choice .
